Race in Brazil has always been complicated. The country, which has the largest population of black people outside of Africa, has prided itself as a "racial democracy," a country wherein racism does not exist because race itself does not exist. But for the millions of black people who actually live in Brazil, disenfranchisement and discrimination are very real parts of every day life that are rarely acknowledged. The result: a series of captivating portraits that reveal the struggles and the joys that these women face on a daily basis. Some women in their 20s, 30s, and 40s revealed that they had just began identifying themselves as black.

The intersection of West th Street and Seventh Avenue in Harlem was, for decades, a center of black nationalism. Brathwaite started his career in photography, taking pictures first of the artists at the shows and then of residents of Harlem generally. AJASS later expanded its arts activism to include the Grandassas — black women the group recruited to model. Black women with kinky hair, full lips, dark skin, and curvy bodies.

This one is also made a little bit more interesting by virtue of the fact that I got to work with a dark skin model, which has subtle impacts on both the lighting and retouching processes. The above image is one of the shots taken during the shoot higher resolution version can be found in my portfolio and will serve as the basis for the remainder of this post.
