Bottom of the blue hole
The Great Blue Hole is a giant marine sinkhole off the coast of Belize. It lies near the center of Lighthouse Reef , a small atoll 70 km 43 mi from the mainland and Belize City. The hole is circular in shape, m 1, ft across and m ft deep. It was formed during several episodes of quaternary glaciation when sea levels were much lower. Analysis of stalactites found in the Great Blue Hole shows that formation took place ,, 66,, 60,, and 15, years ago.

Belize Blue Hole Expedition

Belize Blue Hole Expedition |
We know more about the surface of the Moon and Mars than we do about the bottom of the ocean. But blue holes are deep submerged caverns that can reveal things we never knew about our own planet. Green Banana is a blue hole off the coast of Florida that has never before been explored — more is certain about some objects in space. Nutrients were high in Amberjack, so it would be very interesting to see if the same thing is happening at Green Banana.

Richard Branson travelled to the bottom of the world’s biggest sinkhole
The Belize Blue Hole Exhibition team piloted multiple manned submersibles to the bottom of the Blue Hole collecting scientific data, focusing on a complete topographic sonar scan of this unique marine sinkhole and to promote ocean conservation and awareness. Fabien Cousteau and Sir Richard Branson explored the depths of the mysterious Blue Hole, where they made many discoveries of areas that were once above water, various underwater wildlife and found traces of human debris. If you missed the special, you can watch the incredible experience here. Follow the journey into the great abyss and raise awareness about the expedition and ocean conservation. Now, Fabien and a team of scientists, explorers and filmmakers will return and make history by fully documenting this amazing natural wonder and its inhabitants.

Blue holes are underwater sinkholes, similar to sink holes on land. They vary in size, shape and depth, but most are ecological hot spots with a high diversity of abundance of plants and animals. In August and May , a second deeper location, Green Banana, will be explored. The team documented life around the rim of the hole and carbon, nutrients, and microscopic life throughout the hole and in its bottom sediments.
