Sole (foot) - Wikipedia
In humans the sole of the foot is anatomically referred to as the plantar aspect. The glabrous skin on the sole of the foot lacks the hair and pigmentation found elsewhere on the body, and it has a high concentration of sweat pores. The sole contains the thickest layers of skin on the body due to the weight that is continually placed on it. It is crossed by a set of creases that form during the early stages of embryonic development.

Plantar fasciitis
There are certain things you should come down hard on. When you put your foot down on anything, however, it should not be causing you any discomfort. While it is certainly possible to land on a stone and cause a literal stone bruise on your foot, the name does not mean a stone is required.

The plantar fascia is the thick tissue on the bottom of the foot. It connects the heel bone to the toes and creates the arch of the foot. When this tissue becomes swollen or inflamed, it is called plantar fasciitis. Swelling occurs when the thick band of tissue on the bottom of the foot fascia is overstretched or overused. This can be painful and make walking more difficult.
